The Sacrament of Baptism

God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has freed you from sin, given you a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and welcomed you into his holy people. He now anoints you with the chrism of salvation. As Christ was anointed Priest, Prophet, and King, so may you live always as a member of his body, sharing in everlasting life. Amen.
   - from the Rite of Baptism

Baptism is the first sacrament we recieve. The waters of baptism cleanse us from original sin, unite us to Christ, make us members of the Church, and open up for us the life of grace.

In Baptism, we receive the name "Christian," meaning "a little Christ," and we become a part of God's family and heirs of eternal life. For these reasons, the day of our Baptsim is the most important day of our life.

Infant Baptism.
Generally children are baptized within a month or two after birth. Infant baptisms are celebrated within the Mass of the Baptism of the Lord (January), the Second Sunday of Easter (April), the Day of Pentecost (June), and Christ the King Sunday (November). They are also celebrated on Sundays following the 10:00 a.m. Mass by appointment.

Preparation Classes.
Parents must be active parishioners for three months prior to the Baptism and attend three preparation classes. Preparation classes are held on the first three Wednesdays of each month from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. beginning in Mother Marianne Hall. Please bring a copy of your child's birth certificate.

Godparents.
There must be at least one but no more than two, one male, one female. They must be at least 16 years old, fully initiated Catholics, and practicing their faith. Godparents are also required to attend one preparation class.

Adult Baptism
If you are an adult and desire to be baptized, please click on Belonging for more information about the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).
